Top Apps From the Apple Store!
By meantforsea
Having an iPod isn’t strictly about music anymore. The applications in the App Store are countless, but I’ve compiled a list of MUST-HAVE Apps with reasons why.
- Groupon – Everyone likes to save money, right? This application is free and the best app I have ever used. You sign up with your e-mail address and put your credit card on file. Then you fill out your choice of closest city. For example, if you lived close to Philly in February, you could’ve gotten 50% off of LongwoodGardens tickets for Valentine’s Day! That’s TWO tickets for the price of one! Today’s deal: for $20, you get 1.5 hours of bowling and shoe rentals for up to six at Brunswick Zone in Deptford and Turnersville. The Groupons can be printed or you can show your iPod. E-mail notifications are also sent out (that you can opt out of) with new Groupons. There have been Groupons for grocery shopping, Porsche renting, and Paintball shooting; what more could you ask for?
- My Fitness Pal – This is an easy way to check out how healthy you’re eating and whether you’re taking in the right amount of calories. The best part about this application is you don’t have to manually type everything. All you do is type the name of the food and My Fitness Pal will locate the item (with all of its nutritional information). My Fitness Pal will let you put your goal weight and time frame to work with. With that, My Fitness Pal is like a personal food trainer. You can put a food in to see how it’ll affect your daily intake, before you eat it. Of course, the application won’t help you get into shape or lose weight; you have to put some exercise into your routine.
- CardStar – You know all those keychains you have from all the stores your frequent and their plethora of savings? What if you could rid yourself of their weight? This application does just that. You can either scan the barcode on your keychain or you can type in the numbers. When you go up to Sally’s to pick up your red hair dye, you can get a discount. When you go to Acme or Shoprite, you can let the cashier scan your iPod instead of looking for your keys and cards!
- Great Books – This is probably one of the best Free book apps on the market. The choices are classics, but if you’re ever waiting in a doctor’s office and need something to read, look no further than your iPod. The great part about this application is the availability of the book without being connected to the web. Granted, if you have an iPhone, then that’s not important. However, for the many people with iPods, this is a great application.
- Wi-Fi Finder – Ever been lost in a ghost town where your phone even lost service? Let’s hope that never happens to you. BUT if it does, this application will help…you find wi-fi! See, this app stores thousands of hot-spots onto your device. When you are offline, you can area-code where you are, and see hits for where the closest hot-spots are. Granted, you’d have to find your way to these places, but we’ll just hope you have a GPS for that. Regardless, if you’re ever in a rut without internet, you can always find it at the push of a button.
- Pandora – If you like to discover new music and used to use Pandora on your computer, this is a great application to have on your iPod, as well. The problem with this is that it sometimes crashes and their upgrades never really fix the issue. You also only get six skips on your station during an hour. You pick an artist you like and then Pandora will play music similar to that artist or artists that other fans are both a fan of.
- Last.fm – This would be a great application, but they’ve recently taken away the radio stations. Unless you pay the five dollars a month to listen to their radio stations…you’re out of luck. HOWEVER, if you’re one of the early adopters (like myself), then you have until Mid-April to enjoy it…before they cut you off for good, too.
There are more applications in the app store, but these seem to come in handy the most (for me). If you have any other suggestions, please let me know!
